The Expendables, featuring Sylvester Stallone, is an ensemble action movie featuring a stable of action movie stars from the 1980s and 1990s. These include Mickey Rourke, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren. Arnold Schwarzenegger and Bruce Willis appear in The Expendables in cameo performances. Recent action stars Jason Statham, Steve Austin, Terry Crews and Randy Couture also feature.
The ensemble cast of icons, the clichéd storyline, fortuitous killing of henchman, and the violence filled action scene are all designed to make The Expendables a homage to action movies of the 1980s and early 1990s. The Expendables had a budget of US$82 million and upon release it reached number in the United States, United Kingdom and China and had the opening weekend of any movie in 2010.
The Expendables are a team of mercenaries played by Sylvester Stallone as Barney Ross, Jason Statham as Lee Christmas, Jet Li as Yin Yang, Dolph Lundgren as Gunner Jensen, Terry Crews as Hale Caesar and Randy Couture as Toll Road. Micky Rourke plays former Expendable now team coordinator Tool. The film opens with The Expendables rescuing hostages from Somali pirates. On return to America they are hired for a dangerous mission by the suspicious 'Mr Church', played by Bruce Willis. Rival mercenary Trench, played by Arnold Schwarzenegger also meets Mr Church and Ross to discuss the mission, but turns it down.
Their mission is to take down an ex-CIA agent, played by Eric Roberts, who has taken control of the fictional island of Vilena to manufacture drugs, paying the island's dictator and his army to keep a hold over the town. However, the dictator's daughter, Sandra, is angry at what is happening to her island and helps The Expendables in their mission.
After initial reconnaissance showing the mission to be too dangerous, Ross and The Expendables decide to return to try and save Sandra and the island's inhabitants.
